Canada Reflects on Air India Bombing Anniversary, Highlights Tech in Counterterrorism

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney urged ongoing vigilance as the nation marked the 41st anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing, which remains one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Canadian history. Carney emphasized the need to remember the tragedy and intensify efforts to thwart violent extremism.

The Air India Flight 182, also referred to as the Kanishka, was tragically destroyed by a bomb on June 23, 1985, while flying near Ireland. The attack resulted in the deaths of all 329 people on board, including 268 Canadian citizens. Commemorative events took place in several cities, including Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Ahakista in Ireland, to pay tribute to the victims.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing national security, Carney pointed to efforts aimed at disrupting terrorist networks and combating all forms of violent extremism. He underscored new legislative measures designed to address hate propaganda, extremist symbols, and threats against communities.

During remembrance ceremonies, government officials and law enforcement representatives joined in honoring the victims. Additionally, India’s High Commissioner to Canada acknowledged the significance of preserving the memory of the attack and the need to hold perpetrators accountable.

Officials reiterated Canada’s dedication to collaborating with international partners in the fight against terrorism, ensuring the safety of its citizens. Community groups also emphasized the importance of consistently enforcing laws intended to prevent intimidation and extremist activities.
