Tech Innovation Drives EVs and Hybrids to Nearly 50% of Aussie Sales

Date:

In a significant shift in consumer preferences, nearly 50% of new car sales in Australia from April to June 2026 were electric and hybrid vehicles. This trend reflects a growing move away from petrol-powered cars, driven in part by the ongoing volatility of fuel prices.

Battery electric vehicles (EVs) achieved a milestone by capturing a 21.03% market share, the highest ever recorded in the country. The popularity of battery EVs surged, with sales more than doubling from 34,435 in the first quarter to 69,414 in the second quarter of the year. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids also contributed significantly, securing a 10.58% share of the new car market.

In stark contrast, the share of traditional petrol-powered vehicles dropped to 50.84%, marking its lowest level on record. This declining trend is closely linked to the anticipated rise in fuel prices, following the conclusion of the federal government’s temporary fuel excise reduction.

The latest data underscores a pivotal moment in Australia’s automotive market, highlighting the increasing consumer inclination towards more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient vehicle options. As fuel prices continue to fluctuate, this transition towards electric and hybrid vehicles may further accelerate.
