Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, is embarking on a two-day visit to Canada, aimed at enhancing the ties between the two nations. The trip will focus on strengthening bilateral relations, boosting trade, and increasing cooperation in the fields of energy and defense. Fidan’s visit kicks off in Toronto, where he will tour the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. This visit underscores Turkey’s interest in leveraging Canada’s expertise in nuclear energy as part of a broader goal to enhance cooperation in civilian nuclear energy and energy security.
Following his engagements in Toronto, Fidan will meet with Canadian business leaders, academics, and civil society representatives. These discussions will explore potential investments and economic collaborations, reflecting the mutual interest of both nations to deepen their partnership as fellow NATO allies. The Turkish foreign minister’s itinerary also includes high-level discussions in Ottawa with his Canadian counterpart, Foreign Minister Anita Anand. These talks are expected to focus on upgrading bilateral ties toward a strategic partnership, increasing high-level exchanges, and addressing trade barriers. One of the key topics on the agenda is the progression of a long-discussed free trade agreement.
The dialogue between Fidan and Anand will also cover significant regional and global security issues. Topics such as the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, tensions in the Middle East, and maritime security in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz are expected to be discussed. Turkey is likely to advocate for diplomatic resolutions and sustained engagement with all involved parties, emphasizing its role in promoting peace and stability.
Bilateral trade between Turkey and Canada has been on the rise, bolstered by expanding defense cooperation and increased air connectivity. The presence of a large Turkish diaspora in Canada further strengthens the economic and cultural ties between the two countries. This visit serves as a platform to build on these existing connections and explore new avenues for collaboration.
