Spotify Implements AI Detection to Exclude AI Artists from Recommendations

Date:

In a bid to address the rising presence of AI-generated music, Spotify has announced new strategies to help users distinguish between human and AI-generated artists. Beginning in September, the platform will introduce an “AI persona” label which will be prominently displayed on the profiles and track listings of AI-created artists. This initiative aims to maintain clarity for listeners and ensure that genuine musicians are not overshadowed by artificial identities.

Spotify’s approach includes automatically excluding these AI personas from personalized recommendations, allowing users to have a more authentic music discovery experience. The platform emphasizes the importance of transparency as generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry. To further ensure that AI personas are correctly identified, Spotify will employ both human reviewers and AI-powered tools to spot any undisclosed AI-generated content.

The decision follows a significant increase in AI-generated music, a trend that Spotify has been actively monitoring. The company previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the influx of artificial and low-quality content on music platforms. This step is part of Spotify’s broader effort to maintain the integrity of its music catalog and support genuine artists in gaining rightful exposure.

Spotify’s move reflects a growing demand among listeners for clarity on the origins of music tracks. As the use of generative AI in music production becomes more common, the platform acknowledges the need for users to know whether a track is created by a real person or an AI. By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to preserve the authenticity of the music experience for its vast user base.
