The Dutch cyclist broke away on the Col d’Èze, leaving her closest competitor, Kasia Niewiadoma, trailing by 1 minute and 18 seconds at the finish. Despite Niewiadoma’s persistent efforts to challenge Vollering during the climbs, she was unable to keep pace with the decisive move made by Vollering in the final 600 meters of the ascent.
The victory was not without its controversies. A dispute arose between Vollering and Niewiadoma over race tactics during the previous stage. Niewiadoma accused Célia Gery, a member of Vollering’s team, of obstructing her during a crucial section, leading to ongoing discussions between the riders before the final showdown. Nonetheless, Niewiadoma recognized Vollering’s outstanding performance, commending her strength and expressing a desire to compete fairly.
Vollering stated that her triumph was a testament to her team’s sporting prowess, aiming to prove their merit through their performances. Despite the tactical disagreements, Niewiadoma secured second place in the overall standings, maintaining her impressive streak of podium finishes in recent Tour editions.
The concluding stage also presented challenges for Marlen Reusser, who suffered a crash while descending the Col d’Èze. The Swiss cyclist, who had started the day in third place overall, saw her position drop dramatically to 14th in the general classification as a result of the incident.
