Australian PM Albanese Advocates Human-Centric AI Regulation with Vatican Advisor

Date:

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized the importance of ensuring that artificial intelligence (AI) serves the interests of humanity, as his government seeks to bolster AI regulation. During a meeting at Kirribilli House in Sydney on Thursday, Albanese discussed Australia’s AI standards and future regulatory priorities with Father Paolo Benanti, the Holy See’s adviser on artificial intelligence.

The discussions come at a time when Australia is working on developing responsible AI standards that safeguard human interests while addressing the social and ethical challenges posed by rapidly advancing technology. Albanese has consistently highlighted the message of Pope Leo XIV on preserving human dignity in the age of AI, underscoring that technological progress should prioritize human welfare over financial gain.

“Humans must remain in control over AI because the stakes are more than economic, they are social and moral,” Albanese stated. He further noted that both the Catholic Church and Australia share the belief that AI should function in humanity’s best interests.

Father Benanti, who has been advising the Vatican on AI since the papacy of Pope Francis, is visiting Australia at the invitation of the Italian Embassy. During his visit, he addressed the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday following discussions at the University of Queensland.

This collaboration between Australian leaders and religious advisors highlights a commitment to establishing AI regulations that are not only economically sound but also ethically grounded. The meetings reflect a growing recognition of the need to balance technological advancements with moral considerations, ensuring that AI development remains aligned with human values.
