The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that operators of Boeing 737 Max aircraft inspect their planes for potential structural cracks. This directive targets a particular component known as the bear strap, which is integral to the fuselage’s structural integrity around the exit doors. An estimated 471 aircraft are expected to undergo these inspections, set to commence in September.
This precautionary measure comes after similar issues were identified in the older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, where cracks were found in the same fuselage component. Although no such defects have yet been reported in the 737 Max fleet, the FAA emphasizes that the aircraft shares a design and manufacturing process with the older models, suggesting the possible emergence of similar issues.
The FAA has cautioned that undetected cracks in this structural component could undermine the aircraft’s overall structural integrity. Boeing has reassured stakeholders that it has been collaborating with airlines on this matter since its identification in 2019. The company supports the FAA’s decision, noting that these inspections are crucial to detect and address any defects long before they can develop into critical problems.
These inspections come amidst ongoing scrutiny of the 737 Max, which has faced significant challenges in recent years due to safety concerns and manufacturing quality issues. The aircraft type was previously grounded globally following two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019.
