Mark Carney Advocates Enhanced Canada-Caribbean Trade at Commonwealth Summit

Date:

At a meeting of Commonwealth leaders in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the untapped potential of trade and economic cooperation between Canada and Caribbean nations. Carney pointed out that despite strong historical ties and growing economic connections, trade between Canada and the Caribbean falls short of its potential.

Carney’s remarks came as part of Canada’s broader strategy to diversify its international economic partnerships and reduce dependence on the United States. By enhancing trade with Commonwealth countries, Canada aims to secure a more varied economic future. Carney highlighted the significant annual trade Canada already conducts with the region, alongside the large Caribbean-origin population in Canada, as a solid base for expanding cooperation.

During the meeting, Carney also engaged in bilateral talks with Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne. Browne acknowledged Canada’s influence as a middle power and supported its efforts to bolster the Commonwealth. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand participated in discussions with leaders from various Caribbean nations, including the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting focused on trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation among its key priorities. The gathering, which encompasses 56 member countries representing approximately 2.7 billion people, serves as a platform for Canada to strengthen its relationships with member countries and explore new economic opportunities.

Canada currently engages in around $100 billion in trade with Commonwealth nations, making this group a crucial partner in its future economic and diplomatic strategy. Carney’s visit underscores Canada’s commitment to fostering stronger ties and exploring opportunities for growth with Caribbean countries within the Commonwealth framework.
