Severe Weather Strikes New Zealand: State of Emergency in Tasman as Rain and Winds Intensify

Date:

A State of Emergency has been declared in flood-affected Nelson Tasman as another powerful storm system lashes the upper North Island and parts of the South Island. Authorities say the move is precautionary, allowing emergency services to respond quickly to worsening conditions.
Heavy rain warnings are in effect across the top of the South Island, with the Tasman District southeast of Motueka now under a red alert. This escalation follows concerns about potential impacts in areas still recovering from June’s severe flooding. Up to 180mm of rain is expected in parts of Tasman, Nelson, and Marlborough.
Meanwhile, orange rain warnings are in place for Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Rotorua, and parts of the Bay of Plenty. These regions could see up to 140mm of additional rain accompanied by strong winds and possible thunderstorms, especially in Auckland between 7pm and 10pm.
Taranaki faces three separate weather alerts, including damaging winds up to 120km/h expected south of Mt Taranaki. Central North Island regions such as Taihape and Whanganui are also under wind and rain watches. Civil Defence is urging motorists to drive cautiously, stay informed, and check in with family and friends as conditions deteriorate.
