New Zealand and Australia Strengthen Trade Ties with New Standards Agreement

Date:

New Zealand and Australia have reaffirmed their long-standing open trade partnership with a new agreement designed to align trade standards between the two nations. Trade Minister Todd McClay met with his Australian counterpart Don Farrell in Monarto over the weekend to discuss the evolving global economy and deepen bilateral economic cooperation.
Building on the 2009 Single Economic Market framework—which streamlined trade through customs collaboration and regulatory coordination—the two ministers have now endorsed a new Heads of Agreement between Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand. This deal aims to harmonize product and service standards, making cross-border business smoother and more efficient.
A spokesperson for Minister McClay said the initiative will reduce duplication, cut compliance costs, and help businesses operate more seamlessly across both markets. The ministers also committed to working jointly on World Trade Organization (WTO) reforms at its upcoming ministerial conference, reflecting their shared commitment to strengthening global trade systems.
“This is about making it simpler for businesses to trade, invest and grow — not just between our two countries, but across the wider region,” McClay said, emphasizing the strategic importance of the partnership for regional economic resilience.
