India-New Zealand Trade Deal Starts October 2026, Canada Agreement Targeted This Year

Date:

India is set to enhance its international trade ties as its free trade agreement (FTA) with New Zealand will become effective on October 20, 2026. This agreement promises to bolster India’s export opportunities by granting duty-free access to Indian goods entering New Zealand. Key sectors anticipated to benefit from this agreement include textiles, leather, footwear, engineering goods, and processed agricultural products.

In addition to solidifying its trade relationship with New Zealand, India is actively pursuing a trade agreement with Canada. Negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are in progress, with aims to conclude by the end of the year. These negotiations encompass various facets of trade, including goods and services, investment, rules of origin, intellectual property rights, and trade remedies. The latest round of discussions took place in Ottawa earlier this month, and the next session is scheduled for early November in New Delhi.

India’s trade ambitions extend beyond New Zealand and Canada. The country is currently engaged in trade discussions with several other nations, including the United States, Israel, Chile, and Peru. Furthermore, India is reviewing or upgrading its existing agreements with key partners such as Australia, ASEAN, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. These efforts are directed at diversifying India’s export markets and improving access for Indian businesses amidst evolving global trade policies.

The India-New Zealand FTA, signed in April 2026, marks a significant step in India’s strategy to expand its global trade footprint. By eliminating tariffs on Indian exports to New Zealand, the agreement is expected to create more opportunities for Indian businesses to compete in the New Zealand market.

The outcome of these trade negotiations and agreements is crucial for India as it seeks to strengthen its position in the global economy. By securing comprehensive trade deals, India aims to boost its exports and foster economic growth, while adapting to changes in international trade dynamics.
