The pledge from Canada’s leader came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a significant 50% tariff increase on certain Canadian products. The targeted goods include dairy items, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and associated products, with the new tariffs set to be implemented on August 19. This move has heightened trade tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Carney criticized the U.S. administration’s decision, describing the tariffs as a breach of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). He labeled the measures as yet another instance of unilateral trade actions by Washington that undermine the spirit of the trade agreement.
