OpenNebula Systems has introduced the latest iteration of its open-source cloud and virtualization platform, OpenNebula 7.4 “Helix.” This new version aims to enhance enterprise cloud management and meet the evolving demands of AI infrastructure. At the forefront of this update is a revamped Sunstone management interface, designed to provide cloud administrators with a faster and more intuitive experience. The redesign includes improved navigation, resource inspection tools, reorganized settings, and a graphical user interface for VirtioFS management, all intended to streamline daily cloud operations.
The Helix version advances automation capabilities significantly. Key features include OneSwap for large-scale VMware migrations, upgraded OneDRS for resource scheduling, intelligent datastore selection, and enhanced storage migration. Moreover, improvements to OneKS are set to benefit managed Kubernetes deployments. These enhancements collectively aim to help organizations modernize their infrastructure while minimizing operational complexities.
Focusing on AI and high-performance computing workloads, OpenNebula 7.4 integrates support for Axelera AI accelerators and native NVIDIA GPU within the Slurm appliance. It also introduces automated Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) orchestration via NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo). Networking capabilities receive a boost with VLAN Group-level authorization and Open vSwitch Switchdev support, promoting better performance and secure multi-tenant environments.
In terms of data protection, the release strengthens backup functionalities with updates to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX) and introduces Selected Disk Backups. Additionally, it now offers production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Other improvements encompass storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and VMware compatibility, further solidifying OpenNebula’s robust cloud management solutions.
Complementing the platform update, OpenNebula Systems has also launched OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0. This includes updated virtual appliances, AArch64 support for OneKS, compatibility with Alpine Linux 3.24, and deployment enhancements tailored for enterprise cloud environments. Together, these updates aim to simplify cloud operations, accelerate infrastructure modernization, and support the upcoming generation of AI-driven private and sovereign cloud deployments, according to the company.
