President Donald Trump has intensified his rhetorical attacks on Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, calling him a “lightweight” and a “mistake.” Trump asserted that the war against the regime is “pretty much complete” in terms of military destruction. He told reporters in Florida that the Iranian military has “nothing left” and is currently unable to protect its own airspace.
The transition to the younger Khamenei follows the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in the opening days of the U.S.-Israeli air campaign. Trump suggested that the hereditary succession was a sign of weakness and that the Iranian people deserve better leadership. Despite the change in leadership, the U.S. has not slowed its targeting of Revolutionary Guard missile sites and storage facilities.
Trump characterized the war as a “short-term excursion” that was essential to stop a “major attack” against American and Israeli interests. He claimed that the U.S. is “very far ahead of schedule” and has achieved its primary goals with minimal American losses. The President’s focus remains on a “total victory” that removes the threat of Iranian ballistic missiles permanently.
The global oil market has been a primary theater of the conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed to normal traffic. Trump warned that the U.S. would strike “twenty times harder” if Iran continues to harass tankers or energy sites in the Gulf. This warning, combined with hints of an early end to the war, helped bring oil prices back down from their $119 peak.
As the second week of the conflict begins, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon and Iran continues to deteriorate. Trump’s narrative remains focused on the “greatest military in history” achieving its goals against “lunatics.” The administration is now defining the parameters for a post-war regional order that favors Western energy interests.
