Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to participate in two “Forever Canadian” rallies in Alberta, scheduled for October 15 and 16, as the province prepares for a crucial referendum on October 19. This referendum will address Alberta’s future relationship with Canada, with key questions concerning constitutional and immigration issues, alongside the possibility of a future separation vote.
Carney, who was raised in Alberta, aims to emphasize the importance of national unity during his visits to Calgary and Edmonton. His office has confirmed his attendance, as he urges Albertans to carefully consider the potential consequences of separation, which he warns could lead to a prolonged period of uncertainty. In a recent Thanksgiving message recorded at his former high school in Edmonton, Carney highlighted federal initiatives for significant projects in Alberta, including a proposed pipeline to the West Coast, arguing that these endeavors require national cooperation to advance economic and infrastructure priorities.
The “Forever Canadian” campaign, initiated by former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, seeks to rally support for maintaining Alberta’s status within Canada. Carney has underscored that Canadians are stronger together, especially as the country faces various economic and security challenges.
In addition to Carney’s efforts, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to speak in favor of Canadian unity at a conference in Calgary on October 16. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is also slated to address the event, further highlighting the significance of this momentous decision for the province.
