Instagram’s Algorithm May Soon Favor PiP-Friendly Content

Date:

A new feature being tested on Instagram could have a significant impact on its algorithm: Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for Reels. By enabling longer watch times, this feature may indirectly cause the algorithm to favor content that is well-suited for background or multitasking consumption.
The PiP mode, which allows Reels to play in a floating window, is designed to drastically increase average view duration. Since watch time is a critical ranking signal for the Instagram algorithm, creators who produce longer, more engaging content could see a substantial boost in their reach and visibility if this feature is widely adopted.
Currently in a limited test, the functionality keeps videos playing even when users switch apps. This means content like podcasts, long tutorials, or musical performances might become more viable on the platform. Creators should start thinking about how their content can hold a viewer’s attention, both visually and audibly, in a multitasking environment.
This potential algorithmic shift comes as Instagram also launches a native iPad app. The new app provides a better viewing experience on large screens, further emphasizing the platform’s commitment to high-quality video and giving another avenue for long-form content to shine.
